The business which have high-capital assets are looking to cut the maintenance costs by applying machine learning for predictive maintenance. The machine learning software’s collect data from various sources such as PLC’s, Drives, and various sensors. This database is then analysed to give a result.
Many companies have taken an initiative to integrate the automation systems such as PLC’s, Drives and Smart Sensors with IIoT’s to continuously monitor the data. But this is just the first step, the second step is to make a database and feed this data to the machine learning software’s. This is where artificial intelligence comes into play. These machine learning software’s will pass the extracted ‘quality data’ through various algorithms, which will give a ‘data driven decision’ in the output. The decision made by the AI software’s could be used to notify the technicians team or generate a work order to replace the part or the decision made could be used to trigger a fault in PLC and display it on the SCADA system.
For implying artificial intelligence with predictive maintenance industries need a database of the different parameters related to that machine such as current, voltage, power consumption, temperature etc. For example, we can integrate the Ignition SCADA system with MTConnect Module which will communicate with the MTConnect agent in the CNC machine or any other machine which has MTConnect agent configured in it and will extract the real time speed, axis and power consumption data from that machine. Then this accumulated data can be used to do secondary analysis. This secondary analysis can be used to determine when to remove the part and which other additional repairs should be done simultaneously to minimize the cost of removing the part again for some other failure.
In this way the traditional maintenance strategies and machine learning can be combined to cut the cost of maintenance.
