How to gather CNC OEE data without Serial or Ethernet connection.

Heidenhain CNC controllers require ‘option 18’ to communicate machine data via protocols like MTConnect. But unfortunately this feature can only be installed in the newer controllers. And since this feature is an option, there is also a possibility that it was never installed on your machine. This article will help you figure out if your machine has option 18 and what to do if you don’t.

How to know if your Heidenhain controller has option 18?

  • On the CNC, go into program edit mode

  • Press MOD

  • Type “SIK” and press Enter

  • Check the NC version , only versions 340 49x 04 SP9 or above support option 18.

  • If NC version is 340 49x 04 SP9 or above, See if the Option 18 – Heidenhain DNC is Checked.

  • Press END to finish.

What to do when there is no Option 18?

If you own an older CNC it is highly likely that you don’t have option 18 on your CNC controller. This stops you from getting access to some of the CNC data like spindle speed , program being run, etc. But the most critical data like the uptime/downtime can still be recorded using other solutions.

Our CNC Metrics solution

INNOROBIX Automation has a solution to salvage uptime/downtime for any older CNCs (including Heidenhain controllers without Focas) using digital I/O and gateways. Using this system you would still have access to all the data required to get the machine OEE and other critical metric data. Please fill out the form below for more information.
